Permanent residency (PR status) is an authorization granted to a foreign national to reside on a permanent basis in Canada. There is not expiration of PR status, in contrast to temporary residence status which must be extended in a timely manner to remain legally in Canada.

While with the expiration of PR card, you don’t lose your permanent resident status. However, be mindful about attempting to enter Canada with expired PR card. In this case, your PR status may be questioned by the Canadian immigration officer at the port of entry, and you may be required to establish that your PR status has not been lost as a result of not meeting residency requirements.
